Kjell is passionate about how the evolving manufacturing industries interact with and utilize data as an asset to enhance performance and reduce cost.
He graduated from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) with a BASc in Chemical Process Engineering. After university, he started in an engineering consulting role working on large scale oil sands mine designs. A few years later, Kjell moved on to the producer side, joining Devon Canada to work on thermal in-situ oil sands assets (SAGD), eventually moving into the field as an operations engineer in the Jackfish district.
The time spent in the Jackfish plants taught Kjell about the importance of interpreting both subsurface and surface equipment data to optimize production and plant performance, while reducing operating costs during a very tough oil price economy. This drove the opportunity for him to lead the deployment of an Operations Diagnostic Center – a remote plant surveillance team in charge of identifying excursions or plant health issues proactively – using PI and Seeq to gather, interpret and manipulate data to gain insight into the process.
Kjell lives with his wife in Calgary, Canada, where he enjoys golfing and flag football in the short “summers,” and snowboarding in the winters. Having been born in Belgium and living on 3 different continents growing up, you’ll find Kjell traveling the world when not at home – having visited 35 countries and counting!
